Council shows fiscal common sense holding to salary limit
Published October 14, 2004
Editor: Kudos to the Port Richey City Council for sticking to their salary cap of $70,000 annually.
Russell Benford, the present city manager of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., must think the members of the Port Richey City Council just got off the boat. They should track down and hire Jerry Calhoun, a city manager in Ronceverte, W. Va., who is making $38,000 annually. The city can offer almost a 100 percent increase in salary. He would probably be a better manager than Benford!

Law applies equally to all, come rain or shine
Re: Parking ticket, Oct. 3 letter
Editor: As a retired Pinellas County sheriff, the letter writer should know the law. No matter what the weather conditions, motorcyclists have been known to park their motorcycles on sidewalks as well, which is also unlawful and shows poor judgment as well.
As ex-members of the parking enforcement unit of the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, we served for nine and 12 years, respectively. We can vouch that we were fully sworn as volunteer special deputies after taking a 40-hour course of instruction. We have a lot of respect for these volunteers. They may also deter mischief by their presence in the areas.
We don't believe that retired officers should have any more parking privileges than any other motorist. The law is the law in all weather conditions.
When you take this to court, it will be interesting to hear your explanations to the hearing officer. For your information, the officers take pictures of the violations to present at court.
Although it is agreed that Sheriff Bob White is not always available, the other officers made the right decision under the circumstances.
Although we are not acquainted with Pinellas Sheriff Everett Rice, we can't imagine he or any other sheriff not supporting the county laws under any circumstances.

Weather shows no respect for nudist resort owner
Re: For owner of Paradise, life isn't trouble free, Oct. 11
Editor: There was an embarrassment of riches in a recent article about the owner of Paradise Lakes, Joe Lettellier.
He sounds indeed like the proverbial football coach who, having strung together one too many losing seasons, still attempts to lambaste his opponents with, if nothing else, hyperbole. With dogged determination he gets into his trusty fuel-guzzling Detroit dragon each morning to make the long trek to his nudist resort, and if the article is any indication, a daylong localized cloudburst over southern Pasco awaits his arrival.
In the words of a recently departed comic, "I don't get no respect."
