Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios is taking bobsled lessons from U.S. gold-medal winners Jean Racine and Vonetta Flowers with plans of making the 2006 Greek Olympic team.

Chelios, whose parents were born in Greece, began learning the brakeman position from 2002 champions Racine and Flowers Wednesday in Lake Placid, N.Y., USA Hockey, the sport's governing body, said in a news release.

"I am looking forward to the experience of learning the ropes of bobsledding," Chelios said. "I hope this is the first steppingstone on my way to making it to the next Olympic Games."

Chelios played hockey for the United States in three Olympics. He would need a waiver from U.S. Olympic officials to compete for Greece.

EUROPE: Former New York Islanders coach Butch Goring was hired as coach of Germany's DEG Metro Stars, a professional team in the country's Elite League.
