BROOKSVILLE - You don't have to wait until Nov. 2 to scratch the itch to vote.

On Monday, the county Supervisor of Elections office will open for early voting. All you have to do is show up with a valid identification card with photo and signature. Then you can do your civic duty while avoiding long election day lines.

"It's basically to make it convenient to the voter," Supervisor of Elections Annie Williams said of the service, which the county first offered in 2002.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday of this week, early voting is available at the Hernando County Government Center, Room 165, 20 N Main St., Brooksville, or at the Westside Government Center, 7473 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill.

On Oct. 23, the Brooksville office will be open from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. to serve early voters. And on Oct. 30, the Spring Hill office will offer the service during the same hours.

In the August primary election, 1,736 Hernando voters cast early ballots. Of that total, 819 were Republicans, 792 were Democrats, and 125, independent.

In the 2002 primary, only 623 voters cast early ballots. In the general election that year, 3,003 early ballots were cast.

The figures do not include absentee votes.

The final day of early voting is Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brooksville and Spring Hill elections offices. For more information on early voting, residents may contact the Supervisor of Elections Office at 754-4125.
