Chiefs start off fast, then roll

Chamberlain jumps to 14-point advantage on Gaither and never looks back in a 35-11 victory.

Chamberlain coach Billy Turner said before the game against Gaither that he thought both teams were a lot alike. The Chiefs' 35-11 win over the Cowboys highlighted the differences.

The Chiefs (3-3, 2-1) quickly jumped out to a 14-point lead off touchdown runs from running back Jordan Wilson and quarterback Jet Steele. Chamberlain never looked back.

"We played about as good as we could play," Turner said. "We got off to a hard start (this season) and lost some close games, and it could have knocked the wind out of us. But I think we kind of hit our stride tonight. It looked good."

Wilson capped Chamberlain's second drive of the game with a 3-yard touchdown run and added two more scores.

The senior running back rushed 22 times for 165 yards without even playing the fourth quarter.

Chamberlain quarterback Jet Steele was as good as he needed to be. The senior threw a 36-yard TD to Cody Overby in addition to the one he ran in himself. Steele completed 6 of 9 passes for 138 yards.

"They wanted to play," Gaither coach Mark Kantor said. "They knew their playoff lives were in danger. They've been to the playoffs every year since I've been here. I mean they have that savvy. We don't have that savvy. We're trying to get it but we don't."

Gaither (3-3, 1-2) quarterback John Chestnut completed 17 of 31 for 192 yards. He found Chris Bonner for a 12-yard touchdown pass for the Cowboys' only touchdown.

Chamberlain's win puts them in a good position in Class 5A District 8 with games to play against King and Wharton. Turner can't wait to play again.

"That's the kind of team I thought we might have this year," Turner said. "I'm really excited now."
