C-USA: Team effort propels Memphis past Tulane

MEMPHIS - Tulane learned Saturday there is more to Memphis' offense than DeAngelo Williams and Danny Wimprine, although they did their part.

While Williams had 132 yards and two touchdowns, Darron White scored on a 60-yard punt return and an 8-yard catch and Tavares Gideon caught touchdowns of 38 and 16 yards as Memphis rolled to a 49-24 win.

"A lot of guys got the ball, and a lot of guys contributed," said Wimprine, who was 19-of-24 for 166 yards and completed passes to nine receivers. "It was a pretty productive day."

Memphis racked up 483 yards with a balanced attack of 257 yards rushing and 226 passing.

"I thought we were able to contain their run pretty good," Tulane coach Chris Scelfo said. "We let them gash us in the second half. We didn't respond to adversity from that standpoint."

The Tigers led 21-10 at the half. But they made it 28-10 on Williams' 5-yard run 3:18 into the third. White's 8-yard touchdown catch came 3:42 later. And Robert Douglas' 1-yard run 1:50 after that sealed it.

Memphis' 5-1 record is its best start since 1967, and an improvement over last year, when it was 3-3 but made its first bowl trip in more than 30 years.

"I feel good about where we are as a football team," Memphis coach Tommy West said. "We are kind of a quiet, sneaky 5-1, and that is pretty darn good.

"We have come a long way."
