Republican event should be under control of city, not the party

Published October 19, 2004

Editor: Is the city of New Port Richey renting Sims Park to the Republican Party for today's presidential appearance? Or is this just a privilege the city is extending?

I, as a taxpayer, feel we should have access to the park at all times. To tell us we must go to the Republican Party headquarters to get a ticket is true gall.

I truly feel no political party should be in control of tickets. The New Port Richey city clerk should be passing out tickets so all people have a fair chance. That would keep it from being one-sided.

Traffic light is necessary to help subdivision residents

Re: New traffic light is a bit premature , Oct. 17 letter. Editor: Sorry, if the light at State Road 54 and Starkey Boulevard slows down you and the other drivers a little bit to allow folks who live in the three subdivisions between Gunn Highway and Little Road a safe shot at getting in or out of their subdivisions.

The traffic light was on flashing yellow, and folks like the letter writer did not slow down a single bit. In fact, even now when the light turns green you folks are off to the races. If you see someone trying to get in or out of a subdivision, slow down. Life is short, and an extra 30 seconds will not get you home sooner but it might just make it safer.

Another important fact is that school buses enter and leave these subdivisions several times a day, and the light is necessary.

Traffic, lack of light make bus stop a problem

Editor: I live in Shady Hills and have three kids, all of whom are in school and catch their buses on Shady Hills Road. One of my children is in middle school, and he catches the bus at Platinum Drive and Shady Hills Road at 6:45 a.m.

My problem, along with the other parents, is that we do not like leaving our children at the bus stop alone in the morning for fear they will be hit with all the traffic. Unfortunately, some of us are not able to stay because, like myself, we have to be to work at 7 a.m.

Our main problem with that stop is there is no light whatsoever, and the traffic gets so congested at the intersection. It can stay that way until after the elementary school buses run and then, of course, it starts again in the afternoon and stays that way until well after 6 p.m. The parents would not be so concerned except there have been numerous accidents there through the years, and none of us seem to know who or where to go to get it corrected.

They may complain about store, but they'll sure shop there

Editor: For quite awhile we have been reading about the proposal to build a Wal-Mart supercenter at Beacon Woods Drive. Along with that proposal comes countless objections.

The one fact, however, has been overlooked. If a Wal-Mart supercenter is ever built there, 99 percent of those complaining will shop there.
