TAMPA - Chamberlain senior Tony Diaz captured medalist honors Monday at the Class 2A< District 7 tournament en route to guiding the Chiefs to a second straight district championship at Rogers Park Golf Course.
Diaz shot 74 for low-score honors and the Chiefs edged Wesley Chapel 312-319.
Cameron Knight's 75 was low for Wesley Chapel and second for the tournament. Gaither scored 333 and Plant 336 to complete the top four teams qualifying for Monday's regional at Rogers Park.
King scored 337 for fifth, missing a regional berth by a stroke.
"We are really, really happy," Chiefs coach Hank Bontrager said. "Our first goal was to win district and I told the guys before the meet, only four have to do well. Today our No.2 guy won and our No.4 came through to place second. I believe this momentum will help us next week in the regional meet. We are all really excited right now."
The Chiefs' scoring players also included Maxwell Hutson (78), Brad Brunner (79) and David Hobson (81). Kennedy Fisher scored 85 to finish in the top 20.
Josh Raines, Matt Cooney, Brian Aaron and Ryan Coll scored for Gaither, and Carter Ilgenfritz, Benjamin Powers, Charlton Boyer and Colin Casper scored for Plant.
"Except for a couple of shots, I was hitting everything solid today," Diaz said. "We had a pretty good idea we could win districts, but we also knew Wesley Chapel had a great team. Max Hutson's 78 helped us quite a bit today. Without that score it could have been really close. Regionals are something we are all looking forward to."
Qualifying as individuals were Chris Biuso, Marc Hensel and Lance Byers of King with 80s. With an 81, Michael Schneer of Hillsborough earned the fourth individual spot.
