Get away

A day to remember the Civil War

By Times Staff Writer
Published October 21, 2004

Tarpon Springs is remembering the Civil War on Saturday with two events, and, refreshingly, neither involves a mock battle.

The first is a Blue and Gray tour from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. of the Cycadia Cemetery, 1005 E Tarpon Ave., and the nearby Rose Cemetery on Jasmine Avenue. The tour includes music and an 1860s encampment with re-enactors in costume among the graves of Union and Confederate Civil War veterans. Free. (727) 937-1130.

That night, the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center presents a related musical show, "In Thinking of America - Songs of the Civil War" with tenor Robert Trentham, above, and pianist Richard Pearson Thomas. The show combines letters, speeches and social commentary of the day with familiar songs of the era. The show is at 8 p.m. at the center, 324 Pine St. $14-$16. (727) 942-5605.
