The Yankees were feeling pretty bad after becoming the first to blow a 3-0 series lead. They had to feel worse after reading the morning papers.
The Yankees didn't get any sympathy from the tabloids, with the Daily News proclaiming "THE CHOKE'S ON US," and the Post back page blaring "WHAT A CHOKE!"
The treatment didn't get any nicer on the inside pages, with stories speculating on who will get fired as a result of the loss, with general manager Brian Cashman and pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre among the most popular choices.
In one two-page spread, the Post managed to blast three key Yankees with headlines that read, "A-Rod now face of failure," "SHEFF'S COLLAPSE A KILLER" and "Loser Brown fails to cash in."
Joe Torre, who is usually revered, was trashed as well. "Reduced to an average Joe," the Daily News said.
Even the small print was harsh. In Newsday, Jon Heyman wrote, "Like a soul-less, selfish loser, the Yankees crashed and burned in Game 7 last night. George Steinbrenner bought and built this team with $185-million. He got almost everything he wanted but forgot to acquire a heart."
Post's Joel Sherman wrote of Alex Rodriguez: "He is the guy who fled Seattle and the Mariners got better, forced his way out of Texas and the Rangers improved, and joined the Yankees and the Curse ended."
