College football: Scouting reports

No. 4 Miami at N.C. St., 7:45

The Canes are fresh off an exhilarating come-from-behind 41-38 win against Louisville. Much-maligned quarterback Brock Berlin has thrown for more than 500 yards and six touchdowns in the past two games. Miami again likely will start Darnell Jenkins, whose key fourth-down reception led to the win over the Cardinals, and Roscoe Parrish in the revolving door receiving corps. Sinorice Moss should also return. Berlin will be tested as N.C. State boasts the best total defense in the country, allowing only 203.8 yards per game, and the top pass defense at 97.5 ypg. T.A. McLendon leads the Wolfpack ground game with 452 yards on 89 carries. He is averaging 90.4 yards and 5.1 per carry but has been injured. QB Jay Davis, replacing the departed Philip Rivers, has thrown for 1,056 yards and four touchdowns while completing 61.6 percent of his passes. Expect N.C. State to try to test a Miami defense that was chewed up by Louisville (more than 500 yards of offense). What went wrong defensively? We didnt play that well in the defensive line, the linebackers and the secondary, coach Larry Coker said, joking. Other than that, we played fine. Look for the Canes to try to get the ball into Devin Hesters hands more often. Hester leads the nation with a 32.3-yard average. He has returned a third of his punts for TDs, including one last week. Hes amazing, probably the fastest guy in cleats in the country right now, Miami center Joel Rodriguez said.
