Vols' defense turns Crimson Tide away

UT coach Phillip Fulmer continues his mastery of Alabama.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee turned to its defense to turn back Alabama's late rally, and the 11th-ranked Volunteers held on for a 17-13 victory with key stops and an interception in the final seconds Saturday.

The Crimson Tide was trailing by a touchdown when Brian Bostick's 47-yard field goal with 6:26 left pulled Alabama within four. Tennessee chose to run the ball three consecutive times, as the orange-clad fans in Neyland Stadium booed, and then had to punt.

The Vols' defense, which had trouble at times stopping Alabama's vaunted running attack, allowed the Tide to get to midfield. But Omar Gaither dropped Alabama's Kenneth Darby for a loss of 3 to make it fourth-and-6.

Alabama went for it and got a break when Parys Haralson was called for roughing the passer for shoving Spencer Pennington in the face. But the Vols got another tackle for loss and Corey Campbell secured the win with an interception.

Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer has defeated Alabama nine of the last 10 tries and is not a popular figure among Tide fans. The long-running border rivalry has taken on a new meaning since Alabama was sanctioned by the NCAA for recruiting violations. Attorneys claim Fulmer was part of a conspiracy to tear down the program.

AUBURN 42, KENTUCKY 10: Carnell Williams rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns and the host Tigers allowed only 110 yards. Ronnie Brown also rushed for two touchdowns for Auburn, which overpowered the league's worst defense to overcome a stretch of sloppy play.

"It kind of showed you how talented this team is," Williams said. "We didn't play too good at all."

Auburn began the week by debuting at No. 4 in the BCS standings. The Tigers capped it with their fifth consecutive blowout win courtesy of a powerful running game and the nation's No. 2 scoring defense.

NO. 10 GEORGIA 20, ARKANSAS 14: David Greene threw for a career-high 382 yards and two touchdowns and Thomas Brown rushed for 107 yards for the visiting Bulldogs. Fred Gibson caught six passes for 169 yards and a touchdown and Reggie Brown had seven receptions for 107 yards in the win. Arkansas' offense lacked much of its punch with quarterback Matt Jones hobbled by a groin injury. He played most of the game, but the Razorbacks had just 278 yards total offense. They fumbled the ball four times, losing it twice.

VANDY 19, E. KENTUCKY 7: Robinson High graduate Kwane Doster ran for 117 yards and quarterback Jay Cutler accounted for two touchdowns for the host Commodores, who were outgained 460-366.

"I'm very pleased we survived that," coach Bobby Johnson said. "We did what we had to do and got the win. I think that's great for our program and great for our players."
