TEMPE, Ariz. - Overall, Andrew Walter has had better games. But his performance Saturday in the fourth quarter against UCLA was as good as it gets.
The senior threw for 415 yards and six touchdowns, two in a late rally, to lead Arizona State to a 48-42 victory over the Bruins.
"I saw some people clearing out with seven minutes (left, with ASU) two scores down, and that kind of got me fired up," Walter said. "Maybe they should do that every game. But there were so many plays out there that we left, all it was was a matter of time and, thank God, finally it came around to our time."
Walter tied Danny White (1971) for the second-most TD passes in a game at the school and his 76 career scoring throws is one shy of John Elway's 22-year-old Pac-10 record.
Derek Hagan had three scoring grabs, including a 46-yarder with 6:36 left to start ASU's road back from a 42-31 deficit.
Walter passed Arizona State into a 43-42 lead with a 65-yard throw to Terry Richardson with 4:51 to play, then found Brent Miller in the back of the end zone for two points.
In the third quarter, UCLA got its first lead at 35-31 on Manuel White's scoring run after a 61-yard burst by backup Chris Markey. Drew Olson, who passed for a career-high 325 yards, hit Tab Perry for a 9-yard score and a 42-31 lead early in the fourth.
USC 38, WASHINGTON 0: Southern Cal's sluggish start only delayed the inevitable - a one-sided victory over the Huskies.
Matt Leinart passed for 217 yards and two touchdowns, LenDale White ran for two scores for the host Trojans, who handed Washington its first shutout since 1981.
USC blew the game open with three touchdowns in the third quarter for a 31-0 lead. Off to their best start since 1988 when they won their first 10, the Trojans have 16 consecutive wins. Washington is assured of its first losing season in 28 years.
CALIFORNIA 38, ARIZONA 0: Aaron Rodgers threw three first-half touchdowns and J.J. Arrington topped 100 yards rushing for the sixth consecutive game to lead the visiting Golden Bears.
Geoff McArthur broke the Cal record for career yards receiving with his 11-yard TD reception 11 seconds before halftime. McArthur caught six for 94 yards to give him 2,768 yards, breaking Bobby Shaw's record of 2,731 set from 1994-97.
OREGON 16, STANFORD 13: Terrence Whitehead ran for 131 yards and the go-ahead touchdown for the visiting Ducks, who also had 10 sacks. Stanford had a chance to force overtime after getting the ball back with 16 seconds left and completing two long passes, but Michael Sgroi's 49-yard field goal try fell short as the clock expired.
OREGON ST. 38, WASH. ST. 19: Derek Anderson threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns for the host Beavers. Dwight Wright caught a touchdown then ran for another for Oregon State, which has consecutive wins for the first time this season. Jerome Harrison ran 19 yards for a score in the third quarter and Loren Langley had a field goal for the Cougars.
