LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Bears passed on signing Tim Couch and will stick with the three quarterbacks on their roster, despite struggles on offense and a 1-5 record.
Couch, the top overall pick in the 1999 draft, had a tryout Friday and Saturday with the Bears, who lost starting quarterback Rex Grossman to a season-ending knee injury in the third week.
Couch was released this year by Cleveland, where he played his first five seasons, and in September by Green Bay. He had been bothered by a sore arm.
"We wanted to look at Tim after he was well, after his elbow and shoulder had healed. We got a chance to do that this past week," coach Lovie Smith said. "Right now we think we're going in a different direction. The three guys we have on our roster right now is what we're going with."
Jonathan Quinn and rookie Craig Krenzel each played a half in Sunday's 19-7 loss to Tampa Bay. Krenzel, in his first NFL appearance, was 9-of-19 for 69 yards and led the Bears to their only score. He also threw an interception.
Quinn, who had a 77-yard screen pass TD called back on the first play, was 5-of-9 for 47 yards after making his third straight start.
COWBOYS: Receiver Terry Glenn will be out at least two weeks because of a sprained right foot. Coach Bill Parcells said the injury won't require surgery but is "pretty severe."
GIANTS: Coach Tom Coughlin wants to talk with Barrett Green before discussing the status of the benched linebacker for this weekend's game with Minnesota. Green lost his job at weakside linebacker last week for being late to a meeting during the bye week.
PACKERS: Quarterback Brett Favre sprained his right hand Sunday and played even while the pain got worse. His practice work will be limited this week, offensive coordinator Tom Rossley said. ... Safety Darren Sharper and cornerback Al Harris sprained knees Sunday and might not play.
PANTHERS: Running back DeShaun Foster won't play again this season and needs surgery on his broken collarbone.
REDSKINS: LaVar Arrington strained his right knee in practice, a setback for the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker hoping to play after missing four games.
SEAHAWKS: Outside linebacker Isaiah Kacyvenski suffered a high right ankle sprain against Arizona and is doubtful for Sunday's game with Carolina.
VIKINGS: Randy Moss is expected to play a meaningful role this weekend against the Giants, even without a fully healed right hamstring. Moss started Sunday to keep his consecutive games streak alive at 102, but the All-Pro wide receiver was limited to two snaps and did not catch a pass.
