England's Hereford Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys has a concert Thursday night (Oct. 28) at St. Peter's Episcopal Cathedral. Choristers especially are invited to take in the program of English church standards and the Faure Requiem. "We realize that Thursday evening is a rehearsal night for many choirs, but we are hoping choir directors will see the value of making other arrangements (tonight)" and attend the concert, the cathedral's music department says in a news release. The choir, directed by Geraint Bowen, sings at 7:30 tonight at the church, 140 Fourth St. N, St. Petersburg. Suggested donation: $10. (727) 822-4173.
Threads in a musical quilt
You could call Donna Wissinger a Renaissance woman. Not only is she a highly regarded flutist, she also is a tennis pro, marathon runner, massage therapist and poet. She once bicycled from New York City to Miami. Amazing Grace: An American Tapestry, her CD on the Eroica label, includes homespun classics such as Copland's Simple Gifts, Rorem's Whales Weep Not! and Barber's Canzone. Wissinger, with pianist Christine Mori, plays at 7:30 tonight at Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center. $12, $14. (727) 942-5605.
Manilow still matters
Since he began entertaining in the 1970s, Barry Manilow has kept fans and earned new ones with live performances filled with warmth, wit and fabulous music.
Manilow may be an adult contemporary star, but his fans run the gamut. Have you ever seen the hodgepodge of people in his audience? His fans are diehard, too, or didn't you see the "Fanilow" episode of NBC's Will & Grace?
His hits include the disco smash Copacabana (which has been remixed for 2005), Mandy, I Write The Songs, Looks Like We Made It, Can't Smile Without You, I Made It Through The Rain . . . the list goes on.
Barry Manilow performs at 8 p.m. Saturday at the St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. $44.76-$135.50. (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100.
