TAMPA - Chamberlain High School's boys golf team is headed for the state tournament, having finished only one point behind Clearwater Countryside in the Class 2A, Region 4 meet on Monday at Rogers Park.

The Chamberlain Chiefs' score of 306 was second to the Countryside Cougars' 305, but the top two teams move on to the state meet, giving Chamberlain an opportunity to improve on last year's sixth-place finish in the statewide 2A meet.

All four scoring Chiefs scored in the 70s in the regional meet, and the fifth player scored 79.

"We were paired with Countryside, so our five played their five in a very good see-saw match all day," Chamberlain coach Hank Bontrager said. "Our guys were disappointed to finish second, until they realized this was their lowest team score and they still qualified for the state meet."

Chamberlain senior Tony Diaz scored 75 for the Chiefs' low score. Brad Brunner, Kennedy Fisher and Maxwell Hutson all scored 77, and No. 5 player David Hobson shot 79.

"On the 18th hole, two of our guys shot double bogies or we could have scored 300," Bontrager said. "We're looking forward to the state meet next week. I have hopes of finishing in the top five this year."

The state meet is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at the Fairwinds Golf Course just north of Fort Pierce. Each team will play 36 holes.
