Florida-Georgia: Ten memorable games

Published October 30, 2004

1966 - UGA 27-10: The No. 7 Gators, unbeaten and led by senior quarterback Steve Spurrier, are clobbered by unranked Georgia. The Bulldogs win the SEC title, and Spurrier never forgives Georgia.

1975 - UGA 10-7: Unranked Georgia beats the Gators, who enter at No. 11 and are a 10-point favorite. Trailing 7-3 with 3:24 left, Georgia tight end Richard Appleby fakes an end-around and passes to Gene Washington for an 80-yard score.

1976 - UGA 41-27: The infamous Fourth-and-Dumb game. No. 10 Florida leads 27-13 at the half, and 27-20 in the third quarter when it faces fourth and 1 at its 29. Coach Doug Dickey goes for it, but running back Earl Carr is stopped short and the Gators never recover.

1980 - UGA 26-21: In the rivalry's most memorable game, No. 2 Georgia trails No. 20 Florida by one with 90 seconds left. Facing third and 11 at its 7, Georgia scores when Buck Belue completes a pass to Lindsay Scott, who catches it at the 25 and outruns all defenders. Georgia wins the national title.

1984 - UF 27-0: After six straight losses to the Bulldogs, the No. 10 Gators stun No. 8 Georgia. Freshman quarterback Kerwin Bell delivers the dagger with a 96-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Nattiel.

1985 - UGA 24-3: Florida defeated Auburn the previous week and moved to No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time. But the 17th-ranked Bulldogs stuff the Florida running game and deliver the upset to ruin the Gators' national title hopes.

1990 - UF 38-7: In Spurrier's first crack at the Bulldogs as coach, No. 10 Florida beats unranked Georgia in a game that is a rout from the start. In 12 games against Georgia, he goes 11-1.

1992 - UF 26-24: No. 20 Florida shocks No. 7 Georgia, ruining the Bulldogs' bid for an SEC title and possible shot at the national championship. The Gators, once 1-2, claim the SEC Eastern Division crown a few weeks later.

1995 - UF 52-17: With Jacksonville's Gator Bowl under renovation, the game is played in Athens for the first time since 1932. The 52 points are the most by an opponent in Sanford Stadium. Says Spurrier, "We wanted to try to make it a memorable game for the Gators."

1997 - UGA 37-17: No. 6 Florida falls to No. 14 Georgia as the Bulldogs pull away in the second half. In their eighth try against Spurrier, they finally win.
