Big fake breaks the streak for Lecanto

While not quite as long as the Red Sox' wait, it had been 17 years since the Panthers last beat the Pirates.

CRYSTAL RIVER - Lecanto's Richard Chaney faked a fourth-quarter punt and broke tackles for a 42-yard touchdown for a 13-7 victory, the first in 17 years against Crystal River.

On fourth-and-19, Chaney faked like he was throwing to hold the defense off balance for a second or two, before running into the end zone with 5:58 left in the fourth quarter.

"I was hoping we were going to run it," said Chaney, who had 128 yards on 27 carries. "I told coach in practice, he put it in there, I told them that if we ever ran it, if we ever needed it, I would get it for him."

The win is Lecanto's first against Crystal River since 1987, when Lecanto won 30-29 on a last-second 43-yard field goal.

"We've been working hard all season to try to prove to everybody that we can actually play," Lecanto quarterback C.J. Osburn said. "I think we proved tonight that we can play."

Crystal River took a first-quarter lead when do-everything kicker-running back-safety-special teams player Matt Pepito picked off an Osburn pass for a 30-yard return, setting up a first-and-goal on the 5-yard line. After a 1-yard run, Pepito got in on a 4-yard carry and then kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

On Lecanto's next possession, Osburn threw a 45-yard bomb to Charlie Klyap, who caught the pass at the 10-yard line and ran it in to complete a 3-minute, 46-second, nine-play drive to leave the game tied at 7 for the half.

After the break, neither Lecanto nor Crystal River seemed to move the ball. Then on Lecanto's second drive, after Chaney runs of three, four, three, two yards and an Osburn 17-yard pass to Stuart Anders, Crystal River made a goal line stand on fourth-and-one, led by linemen Richard Drawdy and Ryan Stephens.
