NEW PORT RICHEY - Mitchell controlled River Ridge on both sides of the football Friday night, earning its first shutout and a playoff berth with a 33-0 win. "I'm so proud of these kids," Mustang coach Scott Schmitz said. "I know I've never coached a group of kids like these before."

Mitchell did most of its damage on the ground, rushing for 333 yards, compared to minus 10 for River Ridge. The Royal Knights had two first downs, and 16 yards of total offense.

"This game wasn't lost tonight," River Ridge coach Mike DeGennaro said. "It was lost during the summer. They were bigger and stronger than us, and it showed."

The Mustangs started with a bang, as Spencer Brown scored from five yards out to cap a nine-play, 71-yard drive with 5:45 left in the first quarter. The senior fullback/outside linebacker carried the ball seven times for 55 yards on the drive. He finished with 152 yards on 19 carries.

After the teams traded punts, Mitchell was given a gift when Cameron Baker's third punt of the night traveled only 10 yards, giving the Mustangs the football at the River Ridge 15-yard line. Three plays later, tight end Sean Fenech caught a 5-yard pass from quarterback Chris Watts in the corner of the end zone, giving Mitchell a 14-point advantage. Watts finished 4-for-7 with one touchdown and one interception.

He added a 3-yard touchdown run in the second half, on a play in which he fumbled the snap.

"All Chris Watts does is make plays," Schmitz said.

River Ridge appeared to have an opportunity on its ensuing drive, as Sam Bell returned the kickoff 67 yards to the Mitchell 32-yard line. The Royal Knights went three-and-out, again punting.
