Sickles girls take region crown

TAMPA - Area swimmers performed well in the Class 2A, Region 3 meet at the New Tampa YMCA on Friday.

Sickles won the girls championship with 79 points, followed by Charlotte with 77 and Wharton with 65.

On the boys side, Fort Meyers took first with 142 points; Countryside and Plant finished second and third, respectively, with 74 and 53 points.

Michael Silva of Freedom took the 200 IM in 1:55.5 and the 100 breaststroke in 57:41. Silva qualified for the U.S. Open to be held in San Antonio.

"Michael was very, very excited by his performance," Freedom coach Ty Carter said. "He is a terrific competitor." Wharton's Marjorie Chamberlain had two victories, taking the 200 freestyle in 1:55.49 and the 100 butterfly in 58.74. Armwood's Volovetski Aleksander took first in 1-meter diving, and Wharton's Chris Olinger won the 200 freestyle in 146.91 and finished second in the 500 freestyle.

The Sickles 400 freestyle relay team, comprised of Regina Mayer, Megan Cook, Britney Went, Caroline Foster and Erin Hotchkiss, took first.
