By Times Staff Writer
Published October 31, 2004

Times staff writer Dave Scheiber took first place in sports writing in the Florida Press Club's 2004 Excellence in Journalism Contest in the large newspaper circulation class. Sports writers throughout the state were eligible and were judged on three stories per category.

Scheiber entered a profile of baseball icon Don Zimmer, a story about quadriplegic "sip-and-puff" sailor Tim Swieckowski and a piece on the rigors of professional umpire school.

He also finished third in the excellence in feature writing category.
