Despite a case of strep throat, she comes in second in Class 4A, Region 2, enough to make the field next Saturday in Tampa.
BRADENTON - On a day when Gaither's Amanda Quick wasn't anywhere near her best, she still found a way.
Quick finished second Saturday in the girls Class 4A, Region 2 race at Lakewood Ranch High School to earn a trip to the state championships Nov. 6 at Ed Radice Park in Tampa.
Quick woke up Tuesday with a severe illness that was later diagnosed as strep throat. She took a shot later that day and has been on antibiotics all week leading up to Saturday's race.
She was ready to run, but not at peak form.
"When I get sick it usually takes about a week before I feel better," the junior said. "I just hope I'm better by next week because I still feel like I can win it. (Saturday) I was fine until I started to feel it at the end."
Gaither finished fourth in the team competition and will be Hillsborough County's only 4A girls representative at state. Quick's teammate, Kathryn Kramer, was third overall, just more than six seconds behind Quick.
Kerry Allen of St. Petersburg dominated the girls field in 19 minutes, 11.53 seconds on a muddy track. Sarasota Riverview won the team competition with 92 points, edging Vero Beach (95).
In the boys 4A race, Seminole easily outdistanced second-place Vero Beach, 58-113.
