BROOKSVILLE - Pat Fagan appeared headed toward a decisive victory over Linda Prescott in the runoff race to replace retiring Hernando County School Board member Gail David.
Fagan, the county's longtime parks and recreation director, said he was thrilled to win the board's District 2 seat, but would approach his new position carefully.
"I do not plan on jumping in and making any changes," he said. "I'm just going to sit back and learn the process."
The soft-spoken Fagan, 55, added that he would work to become a "consensus builder and team player."
Fagan, a Spring Hill resident, stressed reducing spending on new school construction by building "smart" while increasing teacher salaries and raising test scores.
Prescott, a 56-year-old Hernando Beach resident, had focused her campaign on raising teacher salaries, reducing overcrowding, and increasing student participation in advanced placement and vocational training programs.
Prescott, a teacher at Hillsborough Community College, was not available for comment Tuesday night.
Fagan said his priorities will include studying the district's budget and overcrowding.
But first, he has some immediate work to do.
"Raising my signs," said Fagan, his face sunburned after weeks of sign waving. "I'm planning on getting up tomorrow morning to start collecting them."
