Katherine Harris, the Republican darling who is still reviled by many Democrats for her role in the 2000 presidential race, was re-elected to Congress on Tuesday.
Harris, 47, won a second term in a rematch of her 2002 race with Democrat Jan Schneider, 57, a Sarasota lawyer, in southwest Florida's 13th District. The district includes all of Sarasota, Hardee and DeSoto counties, a large chunk of Manatee County and part of Charlotte County.
Many Democrats still are bitter about the dual role Harris played in Florida's 2000 recount, which gave Republican George W. Bush the state by 537 votes. Harris oversaw the recount as Florida's secretary of state while serving as state co-chairwoman of Bush's campaign.
