For the past six Novembers people with a passion for fishing and helping children have raised money for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Starting November 12 and running through the 14th, the seventh annual Chuck LaMar's Grand Slam Celebrity Fishing Tournament is scheduled out of the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg.
Both sport and entertainment celebrities join forces with devoted anglers to try to catch and release an inshore grand slam of snook, redfish and speckled trout. About 50 boats are expected to compete for prizes in the two-day event, with all proceeds benefiting cancer research.
"Over the course of the last six years the tournament has raised close to $1-million," said Lindsay Whitney of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. "This year's event will put us over that."
New for this year's tournament is an offshore division presented by Treasure Island Charities, with anglers competing for amberjack, grouper and snapper. Also new is a head-to-head fish-off between top anglers in a fly-fishing division, in which anglers try for redfish, snook, speckled trout and cobia.
Some of the confirmed celebrities include Lou Piniella, Jimy Williams, John Tortorella, Roland Martin and Mark Sosin.
Entry forms are available by contacting the Pediatric Cancer Foundation at (813) 269-0955.
