Capriati ousted at Advanta

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Saddlebrook's Jennifer Capriati saw her shot at qualifying for the WTA Tour Championships end with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Vera Zvonareva in the quarterfinals of the Advanta Championships. After a long first game that featured three deuces, Zvonareva took over, winning the opening eight games.

Zvonareva will face Nadia Petrova in the semifinals. The No. 7-seeded Petrova knocked off French Open champion Anastasia Myskina 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Venus Williams also lost, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 to top seed Amelie Mauresmo .

MORE TENNIS: Top-seeded Mary Pierce was knocked out of the Bell Challenge in the quarterfinal round, losing 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) to Alina Jidkova, who will face American qualifier Abigail Spears on Saturday in Quebec City. ... Marat Safin hit 10 aces and beat Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) to reach the Paris Masters semifinals.

COLLEGES

BASKETBALL: UCLA point guard Cedric Bozeman tore a knee ligament in practice and will miss his senior season. ... Mississippi State's Lawrence Roberts must sit out one game for accepting - and later repaying - expenses for a pre-NBA draft workout. ... Southern Cal point guard Rodrick Stewart was granted a release from his scholarship, but no reason was given for the request. Stewart and his identical twin, Lodrick, came to USC last season from Seattle. Lodrick will stay at USC.

SOCCER: Two goals by Cherry Pickman and a goal by Stephanie Freeman advanced the No. 16 Florida women to their ninth consecutive SEC tournament final with a 3-0 win over Mississippi Auburn Complex. Florida meets the winner of the Tennessee-Vanderbilt match in Sunday's final. ... The third-seeded UCF women's team defeated Jacksonville 3-0 in the Atlantic Sun semifinals in Buies Creek, N.C. ... The University of Tampa women clinched a spot in the Sunshine State Conference tournament finals with a 2-0 victory over Nova Southeastern. UT will play Rollins Sunday.

TENNIS: All members of the Florida women's team were eliminated from main draw competition at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor.

VOLLEYBALL: Samanta Tucillo had a match-high 10 kills for host Barry (23-1, 12-0 SSC) in a 3-0 (30-18, 30-12, 30-15) win over Eckerd (10-11, 4-7). ... Visiting Saint Leo beat Lynn 3-1 (30-24, 30-18, 30-21, 30-22). ... The University of Tampa swept Nova Southeastern 30-17, 30-19, 30-15.

OLYMPICS: More doping questions

A blood sample from Ireland's Olympic show-jumping champion will be tested to determine whether a gold won in Athens - Ireland's only medal - should be stripped. Waterford Crystal's sample will be analyzed after inquiry was launched when the horse's initial sample tested positive for a banned substance.

ARENA FOOTBALL: The Storm signed Herb Haygood, a former Sarasota High running back who spent time with the Broncos and Chiefs, and offensive/defensive lineman DeMarcus Johnson, who played at Central Florida.

BOXING: Ex-heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe will fight Kenny Craven in the 10-round featured bout Nov. 27 in Louisville, Ky.

HORSES: Shiloh Bound took the lead early and held off a late charge from favorite Ay Caramba for a 11/2-length win in the featured $57,675 allowance for 3-year-olds and up at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. ... Mr. Whitestone closed strongly for a victory over Watchem Smokey in the $58,000 allowance at Aqueduct.

SAILING: Spain will contribute about $1.3-billion toward unspecified infrastructure projects for the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia. ... The USF coed sailing team took first place in the SAISA Fall Dinghy Champs in Charleston, S.C. last week, while the women's team finished ninth at the Victoria Urn at Harvard.

SOCCER: Davy Arnaud scored twice to lead Kansas City to a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy, putting the Wizards in Major League Soccer's championship game. The Wizards will play for the MLS Cup on Nov. 14 in Carson, Calif.
