TALLAHASSEE - Donna G. Callaway, a middle school principal and former teacher of the year, has been appointed to the state Board of Education, Gov. Jeb Bush announced Tuesday.
Callaway, who has an undergraduate degree and two master's degrees from Florida State University, is principal of Tallahassee's Augusta Raa Middle School, where Bush has been a student mentor.
She will serve on the board until Dec. 31, 2005, finishing the term of William L. Proctor, who was elected to the Legislature from District 20 in the St. Augustine area.
Callaway started her career in 1961 as a high school English teacher, and went on to serve in school administrations and on the board of trustees at Tallahassee Community College. She was named teacher of the year in 1985 while working at Belle Vue Middle School in Tallahassee.
Proctor, former president of Flagler Community College, was appointed to the state Board of Education in 2001.
