Despite longtime opposition, the county okays offices and homes on Jacqueline Road.

BROOKSVILLE - The location and land use designation of a 20-acre parcel on Jacqueline Road have made it a battlefield between developers and nearby residents.
The tract is just behind the Coastal Way Plaza at State Road 50 and Mariner Boulevard, one of the county's busiest intersections.
But the land is listed as rural on the county's comprehensive plan and most of the neighbors live on lots covering several acres.
After rejecting several previous plans, the County Commission on Wednesday approved a proposal to build 59 units in single-family houses and duplexes, as well as 4 acres of offices on the land.
That density is far lower than previous plans.
Brooksville developer Gary Schraut originally wanted to build 240 multifamily units on the property. That proposal was rejected in 2000.
In 2002, Schraut proposed but eventually withdrew a plan to build miniwarehouses and 100 multifamily residences on the property.
But the project approved Wednesday still didn't please its neighbors. They said the development will not fit in with their quiet neighborhood and will put too much traffic on Jacqueline, which runs just behind Coastal Way and has a steep crest that obstructs the view of drivers.
"The north side of that street (Jacqueline) is supposed to be rural," said Thomas Cook, who lives to the north of the proposed development.
"That road is not a collector road. It's not up to the standards of a collector."
Another neighbor, Jeffrey Jackson said, "The people in this area don't want this. It's going to stick out like a sore thumb."
But Schraut said his plan would allow the commission to correct a problem of having rural land butting up against the busiest commercial hub in the county.
The office and professional buildings will be on the southern edge of property, overlooking the back side of Coastal Way. He said these offices would look like houses and would provide a good buffer between the commercial and the residential lots on the northern portion of the parcel.
