College football

What's in a name?

By ANTONYA ENGLISH
Published November 11, 2004

Urban Meyer is the hottest name in college football coaching, but how did he get that name?

Turns out, no one's sure.

Not even his dad, Urban Meyer II. One story has the name originating with the Utah coach's grandfather being named after a Catholic pope. Eight popes have been named Urban, the most recent in the 1600s.

Urban II, who goes by Bud, has heard the pope story but doesn't know if it's true.

"It was my father's name, and I don't know where he got it from," Bud Meyer said. "He named me Urban because people were supposed to do that back then. And then I named Urban that because people were supposed to do that. And then he named his kid Nathan because people are supposed to do that.

"At some point it has to stop, I guess. But honestly, I don't really know where the name came from. I just know there were three Urbans."
