MIAMI - Outgoing Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas, who lost a bid for U.S. Senate this year, plans to practice law and teach.

Penelas, 42, said Wednesday he will teach undergraduate public policy symposiums at St. Thomas University, a private university in Miami Gardens, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1981.

The mayor, married and the father of two young sons, also plans to open a law practice, focusing on real estate and corporate law. He will share space with attorneys Jeffrey Baxter and Lewis Robert Elias III, the son-in-law of retiring U.S. Sen. Bob Graham.

Penelas was elected county mayor in 1996 and is completing his second term. He placed third in the Aug. 31 Democratic Senate primary. Graham's seat was won by Republican Mel Martinez last week. Penelas will be succeeded by Carlos Alvarez on Tuesday.
