EDUCATION: B.S. in economics, Yale University, 1984.

CAREER: 1984-88: Works as takeover-stock trader with Goldman Sachs Group.

* 1988: Forms ESL Investments, a hedge fund.

* 2000: ESL begins buying AutoNation shares, and by 2002 is its largest shareholder.

* 2002: Joins AutoNation board.

* 2003: Becomes largest shareholder of Kmart and is named chairman of the board.

WORTH: $1.5-billion. Ranked 377th of 587 billionaires on the 2004 Forbes World's Richest People list.
