Hot ticket: Playing a perennial piano favorite

By Times Staff
Published November 18, 2004

Jon Kimura Parker is the soloist in Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Florida Orchestra this weekend, with associate conductor Susan Haig on the podium. The concerto's grandiose melodies make it one of the most popular works, and audience members should stick around at the end, because Parker has been known to dash off sparkling encores. Also on the program is an intriguing pairing: Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5 Reformation and Carlos Chavez's one-movement Sinfonia India. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Mahaffey Theater at Bayfront Center, 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall and 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. $22.50-$50.50.
