State: FAU breaks through at home with shutout

FORT LAUDERDALE - Jared Allen threw for two touchdowns and Florida Atlantic intercepted Illinois State quarterback Yance Vaughan five times in the Owls' 28-0 win Saturday.

FAU won at home for the first time this season and snapped a two-game losing streak Illinois State lost its third straight and was shut out for the first time since Nov. 2, 2002, 9-0 to Western Kentucky.

Allen was 14-of-23 for 136 yards and threw touchdowns to Larry Taylor and Doug Parker. Daveon Barron had a rushing touchdown.

Vaughan finished 11-of-27 for 169 yards for the Redbirds. He completed one pass in the first half.

In the third quarter, FAU's Willie Hughley intercepted a Vaughan pass and returned it to the Illinois State 18. Six plays later, Parker caught a 13-yard touchdown from Allen to give the Owls a 25-0 lead.

FAU was up 18-0 at halftime after Troy Pindell's blocked punt went out of the end zone for a safety.

W.KY. 35, FIU 14: Brian Porter ran for a career-high 213 yards and four touchdowns as the visiting Hilltoppers scored 21 straight in the second half.

Western Kentucky's option running attack overwhelmed the Golden Panthers' 99th-ranked rushing defense for 383 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

Western Kentucky shut out Florida International in the second half after the teams went into halftime tied at 14.

The Hilltoppers opened a 21-14 lead less than three minutes into the second half when Porter took a pitch from quarterback Justin Haddix and scored on a 5-yard run.
