LAKELAND - A man died Wednesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound one day after he fatally shot his estranged wife and took off with their three daughters.

A search ended at a roadblock a few hours later, where Raymond Gans, 27, shot himself in the head as deputies approached. Jordyn and Meikayala, both 3, and Bailee, 1, were found safe in his van.

Gans died about noon Wednesday at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, authorities said. A short while later, a judge in Bartow awarded temporary custody of the girls to maternal grandmother Patricia Moshier of Lakeland and her husband.
