JACKSONVILLE - A firefighter is accused of plotting to entrap a chief in a phony rape scheme and possibly setting up his friend to replace the chief, officials said.
Edward R. Colleton, 38, of Jacksonville faces a charge of conspiring to commit official misconduct and criminal solicitation. He was jailed Wednesday on $250,000 bail.
Police said Colleton, an engineer in the tactical support division, asked a woman who formerly worked at the department to entice District fire Chief Alonzo McQueen to her home to have sex while he was on duty, then report to police that she had been raped.
The woman, who wasn't identified, reported the plot to McQueen, instead, the Florida Times-Union reported.
Officials taped a Nov. 18 phone call in which Colleton arranged the phony rape with the woman and told her she could share the money from a civil suit award with him, police said.
Colleton also told the woman that the chief would be fired and Colleton's friend, Fire Prevention Capt. Charlie Conner, would be set "free," officials said. Conner, who hasn't been accused of wrongdoing, would be a likely replacement for the chief.
McQueen said there was animosity between himself and Conner because McQueen had reprimanded Conner for his job performance.
