  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Art

His and hers

By LENNIE BENNETT
Published December 16, 2004

Need a respite from all that tinsel and a color palette limited to red and green? Visit the Arts Center, 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg for "Fixed in Time: The Photography of Rebecca Sexton Larson and Matt Larson."

The couple do not work as a team; their very different stylistic approaches to the medium are obvious. They have in common an experimental technical approach, using back-to-the-basics equipment - she a pinhole camera, he a simple toy one - that gives their work, individual as it is, a shared freshness and directness. Both are narrative artists though Matt Larson's photographs (Fragile is above, left) are more straightforward; Rebecca Sexton Larson (whose Bird That Flutters is above, right) paints and draws on hers. The overall effect from both is evocative. Have a seat and slow down.
