RIVERVIEW - An 80-year-old man driving his riding mower across the road in the dark was killed when a car struck him from behind, officials say.

Joseph Robert Blanchard was leaving his driveway on Riverview Drive to cross the road about 6:30 p.m. Monday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

As he crossed, a 2003 Nissan driven by 18-year-old Linsey Owens was heading west on Riverview Drive at about 35 mph when it struck the lawn mower from behind, the Sheriff's Office said. Owens, of Tampa, said she did not see the lawn mower.

Blanchard was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he died.
