TAMPA - Col. Margaret H. Woodward has been named commander of MacDill Air Force Base, replacing Brig. Gen. Tanker Snyder.

When she assumes the post next month, Woodward will become the first female commander of the 6th Air Mobility Wing, the base host.

In a statement, MacDill said Snyder is transferring to Camp H.M. Smith in Hawaii to be deputy director of strategic planning and policy at the U.S. Pacific Command. He took command of the air wing on Jan. 9, 2002.

MacDill also is home to several other tenants, including U.S. Central Command, the nerve center of the war in Iraq, and U.S. Special Operations Command, which oversees the nation's super-secret commandos.

The base commander oversees nearly $3-billion in base property and assets and an annual operating budget of $250-million.

"The world-class team at MacDill has a huge mission with a tremendous impact on the war on terrorism," Snyder said.

Most recently, Woodward has served as deputy director for colonel matters at the Air Force senior leadership management office at the Pentagon. She is an Arizona State University graduate and has logged more than 3,500 flight hours in the T-37, T-38 and KC-135 A/Q/R/T.

There are currently 14 female Air Force wing commanders.
