Hot Tickets: All that Brazilian jazz

By JOHN FLEMING, Times Performing Arts Critic
Published January 13, 2005

Brazilian jazz is the theme for this weekend's EMIT concert, with pianist Haroldo Mauro Jr., and the sextet O Som Do Jazz. Mauro, a Brazilian who teaches at the University of Rio de Janeiro, spent much of his career in New York, playing at legendary jazz havens such as Sweet Basil, the Village Gate and the Blue Note. O Som Do Jazz - David Manson, trombone; Andrea Moraes Manson, vocals; Brent Wahl, guitar and bass; John Ward, flute; John Zwolski, drums; Levy DeAndrade, keyboard - mixes samba, bossa nova and jazz. The concert is at 8 p.m. Saturday at the St. Petersburg College Music Center, 66th Street and Fifth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. $8, $10.

In December, the EMIT series received a Chamber Music America/American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers award for adventurous programming by jazz presenters. Upcoming performers include shakuhachi flutist Philip Gelb Feb. 2, Studio@620 St. Petersburg; guitarist Eugene Chadbourne and drummer Han Bennick Feb. 22, Salvador Dali Museum, St. Petersburg; and spoken-word and jazz artists Oluyemi and Ijeoma Thomas (March 5, Studio@620) Information: www.emitseries.org
