Floating gamblers can imbibe

MADEIRA BEACH - City commissioners voted 4-1 to approve the Alcoholic Beverage Use Permit for SunCruz Casinos.

The vote came more than two months after the commission refused to grant the permit, barring studies into how the gambling boat would affect traffic along busy 150th Avenue.

In December, the company started repaving the area around the docks, near where the boat will dock.

The company has also expressed interest in acquiring and reopening Leverock's Restaurant, a seafood place that closed late last year, said Greg Karan, executive vice president of SunCruz.

He said the patrons of the gambling boat will likely enjoy having a nearby place to eat before and after trips. The 175-foot, 600-passenger SunCruz VII should start operating soon, Karan said.

City commissioners also renewed a one-year lease agreement with the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce and awarded Quinn Construction Inc. the contract for the Island Drive Bridge replacement.
