Spurs muzzle explosive Wizards

SAN ANTONIO - Tony Parker and the Spurs figured out a way to slow the Wizards' high-scoring offense.

Devin Brown scored 24 and Parker 23, and the Spurs stifled Washington's top scorers in a 101-73 victory Monday, snapping the Wizards' seven-game winning streak.

The Spurs, who have the best defense in the NBA, held the Wizards to season lows for points and shooting percentage (31.8 percent). Washington had scored 100 or more in its past 10 games.

Gilbert Arenas, Washington's high scorer at 23.2 points per game, missed all 12 of his shots from the floor and finished with three points, and Antawn Jamison (20.3 ppg) scored six on 2-for-8 shooting.

"I just tried to stay in front of him the whole game and stay in his face," said Parker, who guarded Arenas.

San Antonio took a 21-2 lead, and the Wizards never got closer than 13 in their first loss of 2005.

"We lost a tough game in Houston (on Saturday)," said Brown, who had scored only 13 in his past five games. "We just had to bring more juice tonight, more focus. That's what we did."

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich praised his team's defense, which gives up 85.3 points per game, but said Arenas and Jamison were clearly off their game.

"When you apparently shoot as poorly as those two did, you have to say it was just a bad night," Popovich said. "It was not just that our defense held them to that."

But Arenas disagreed, crediting the Spurs defense for keeping the Wizards out of their offensive rhythm.

"Their rotation is so great," he said. "They didn't let us do anything. We couldn't get a good look or an easy look."

PISTONS 94, SUNS 80: Tayshaun Prince scored a career-high 26 to lead host Detroit past reeling Phoenix, the NBA-leading Suns' fourth straight loss.

The Suns had their fewest points this season and clearly missed Steve Nash, who was sidelined a second straight game with a bruised left thigh. The point guard hopes to play Wednesday at home against Memphis.

After opening 31-4, Phoenix has gone 0-4. The Pistons are headed in the opposite direction, with six wins in a row to move a half-game ahead of idle Cleveland for first place in the Central

BULLS 88, KNICKS 86: Ben Gordon scored on a driving 8-footer with .1 seconds left as visiting Chicago won its seventh in a row.

The Bulls' winning streak is their longest since the 1997-98 team won 13 straight. A member of that team, Scottie Pippen, was in the front row at Madison Square Garden to get a first-hand look at this edition.

Gordon, who scored 13 of his 17 in the fourth quarter, went around a screen to free himself of Jamal Crawford, then took two more steps into the lane and launched his winner over Michael Sweetney's outstretched arm.

76ERS 95, HORNETS 91: Kenny Thomas had 21 points and 15 rebounds, Allen Iverson scored 29 and host Philadelphia held on after nearly wasting a 25-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Corliss Williamson added 16 points for the Sixers, who are 17-20 but tied with the Knicks and Celtics for first place in the Atlantic. New Orleans played without leading scorer Baron Davis, who bruised his right ankle in Sunday's loss to Toronto.

KINGS 89, CLIPPERS 83: Chris Webber scored 23 and Cuttino Mobley hit a clutch 3-pointer with 59.6 seconds left, leading visiting Sacramento. Mobley scored 19 in his second game with the Kings since the trade of Doug Christie to the Magic on Jan.10.

The Kings, who beat the Clippers on Martin Luther King Jr. Day last season at Staples Center, have won the past seven meetings, including Saturday night's 99-95 victory at ARCO Arena. Sacramento has won four straight overall and eight of 10.

NETS 85, HAWKS 84: Jason Kidd scored 19 of his 23 in the second half as New Jersey ended a four-game losing streak. Vince Carter also scored 23 for the Nets, who broke a five-game road losing streak.

BUCKS 99, BOBCATS 92: Michael Redd scored 27 to help visiting Milwaukee break its four-game losing streak. Desmond Mason added 16 points, Dan Gadzuric had 13 points and 10 rebounds, Joe Smith scored 12 and Mike James had 11 for the Bucks.

RAPTORS 100, WOLVES 91: Donyell Marshall made six 3-pointers and scored 22 to lead Toronto. Marshall, the Timberwolves' first-round draft choice in 1994, scored 11 in the fourth as the Raptors won for the first time in Minnesota.

GRIZZLIES 99, ROCKETS 80: Stromile Swift scored 18 and Jason Williams 16 to lead host Memphis, which moved ahead of Houston by a half-game for third place in the Southwest.

BRYANT INJURY: Lakers star Kobe Bryant is out at least two more weeks with a severely sprained right ankle.

Team spokesman John Black said that the NBA's second-leading scorer was examined earlier in the day by team physician Steve Lombardo and foot specialist Philip Kwong.
