Board backs charter school closure

By Times Staff Writer

TAMPA - The Florida Board of Education refused Tuesday to overturn a Hillsborough School Board decision to shut down a Tampa charter school.

The School Board voted last summer to immediately terminate the charter for the Eastside Multicultural Community School, citing chronically poor student performance and allegations of cheating on standardized tests.

The school first appealed to the Charter School Appeal Commission, which ruled against it, then to the Board of Education, which upheld the commission ruling 6-1.

Eastside Multicultural was one of Hillsborough's first charter schools when it opened in 1997 and served nearly 200 students in grades K-5.
