Golf and tennis events put money into kids' programs

Two beach civic clubs are sponsoring sports events to benefit area children.

The first event is Saturday's sixth annual Rotary Tennis and Golf Challenge sponsored by Gulf Beaches Rotary Club at Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis, 10315 Paradise Blvd., Treasure Island.

The event will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Proceeds will benefit the city recreation department children's programs, Treasure Island Tennis juniors programs and the Gulf Beaches Rotary Foundation.

The men's and women's tennis doubles round robin will accommodate 48 tennis players of all playing levels. The golf challenge is limited to 36 men and women. Open tee times are available from 10:30 a.m. to noon. For information, call 547-4575.

The Kiwanis of Gulf Beaches will sponsor its first Gulf Beaches Kiwanis Celebrity Golf Classic on Feb. 21, at 11:30 a.m. at the Bayou Club, 7979 Bayou Club Blvd., Largo.

The event will raise money for the Miracle League, a youth baseball league providing disabled children opportunities to play baseball.

Participants will include Buccaneers, Devil Rays, Lightning players and media personalities. Players will receive a gift package valued at more than $100, including breakfast and dinner, beverages throughout the day and team and individual prizes.

Sponsorship packages, ranging from $250 to $15,000, are available. A few playing spots are available for $250, and four-person team packages are available for $1,000. For information, call Eddie Lee at 244-2171.

Gulfport

The 2005 Collecto-Rama, A Vintage Venue Antiques & Collectibles Show, will be Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Gulfport Casino ballroom, 5500 Shore Blvd.

The event will feature vintage dealers of retro furniture and decor, art, paintings, old Florida souvenirs and memorabilia, movie posters, license plates, garden items, linens, old advertising, postcards, tin toys, kitchen small appliances and more.

The jazz and blues sounds of the Bill T. & Co. quartet will start at 2 p.m. Show admission is $5 for all ages. For information, call 363-4852, or e-mail hulahula@antelecom.net

Indian Rocks Beach

A neighborhood celebration of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church.

Participating churches include St. Jerome's, Church of the Isles, Prince of Peace Lutheran and St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church. The Calvary Episcopal Church Ecumenical Choir will lead the music program.

A reception will follow in the parish hall. The church is at 1615 First St. For information, call 595-2374.

Pure transparent watercolors will be on display at the Beach Art Center, 1515 Bay Palm Blvd., through Feb. 11.

St. Pete Beach

The St. Pete Beach Community Club City is offering adults a chance to play their favorite games such as cards, dominos, chess and Scrabble on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the St. Pete Beach Recreation Department's Upham Room at 7701 Boca Ciega Drive.

Participants must bring their own cards and games. The cost of $3 includes door prizes and refreshments.

The Celestial Viewings & Saturday Stroll on Cool Classic Corey Avenue will be Feb. 5 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Beginning at 6 p.m., members of the St. Petersburg Astronomy Club will share their high-powered telescopes and knowledge of the skies for some fascinating celestial viewings, including Saturn, seen at its closest point to the Earth, and the comet Macholz.

Music for the evening will be provided in both the 300 and 400 block of Corey Avenue, and will feature island-style acoustic tunes, including the original music of Pete Merrigan. For information, call 363-4852 or 363-7808.

Grades prekindergarten through eighth at St. John Vianney Catholic School will celebrate Catholic Schools Week with an open house Feb. 2, from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

A book fair will be open Monday through Feb. 4, from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Media Center.

South Pasadena

An informational meeting regarding the Second Annual City of South Pasadena Fundraising Cruise will be at 4 p.m. Feb. 3 at City Hall.

Mayor Dick Holmes and representatives of Travel Beyond will explain the cruise and how the money raised will be used.

Refreshments will be served. The city-sponsored cruise will raise money to support the Galatea Garden Park Trust Fund.

The previous cruise raised about $1,600 for the city's scholarship fund.

The upcoming cruise will be on the Carnival Miracle, sailing from Tampa on Oct. 30 for a seven-day trip through the western Caribbean, including Grand Cayman, Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, and Belize City.

The cruise costs between $641 and $941 per person (including port charges, taxes and transportation to and from Tampa), depending on the type of cabin.

"Finding Your Way to Work You Love" with Jill Silverman, a career coach, will be the topic of discussion at the Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay's monthly Fountains Brunch and Learn at 9 a.m Feb. 4.

The meeting will include complimentary breakfast and door prizes.

"Use It or Lose It" will be the topic during a complimentary Healthy Habits Luncheon at noon Feb. 16. The Fountains is at 1255 Pasadena Ave. S.
