Jesuit coach close to milestone

After Tuesday's 4-1 win over Berkeley Prep, Jesuit coach Bob Bauman is two games from win No. 400. Unfortunately for Bauman, who is a trial lawyer and will likely be tied up in court next week in Pensacola, he may not be around to see his team get the milestone victory. In his stead, assistant coach Matt Nelson will take the reins.
Jesuit (13-4-4, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A) plays Class 5A, No. 8-ranked Palm Harbor University on Saturday in a final tuneup for the district playoffs. Bauman said if his team makes it to the Feb. 4 district final, he is optimistic he will be present for what could be the Tigers' 19th title in 20 years.
KING FINISHES UNBEATEN: King striker Luckner Jermaine scored a pair of goals as the Lions beat Sickles 3-1 on Tuesday and finished their regular season 17-0-2. In the Class 5A, District 8 tournament, however, King faces Brandon (10-4-5), a team that gave it the two ties.
EAGLES FINALLY BEAT BULLS: Speaking of Brandon, the Eagles (10-4-5) beat Bloomingdale 1-0 Tuesday on Jermaine Walters' solo goal. According to coach Allen Ware, it was Brandon's first win over the Bulls in more than 12 years. Even in the Eagles' state championship season, they could only muster a tie with their arch-rival.
FITZGERALD SOCCER FESTIVAL: On Feb. 13 at Pepin/Rood Stadium, the University of Tampa will host the first Tom Fitzgerald Soccer Festival to raise funds for a scholarship endowment in the late coach's name. The schedule:
Youth soccer clinic, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Cost is $50 and includes admission to exhibition games later in the day.
Soccer coaching clinic, 2-3 p.m. with former South Florida coach Jay Miller and U-17 men's national team coach John Hackworth. Open to all coaches who purchase game tickets.
U.S. men's U-17 national team vs. MLS New York Metrostars, 4 p.m.
MLS Columbus Crew vs. MLS Salt Lake City Real, 6 p.m.
