  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Hot Tickets: Bernadette Peters (and friends) sing tonight

By JOHN FLEMING
Published January 27, 2005

Bernadette Peters has lots of musical theater material to choose from for her Florida concert tour, which brings her to Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall tonight. She's a prime interpreter of Stephen Sondheim, originating roles in Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods. She won a pair of Tony Awards more than a decade apart for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance and Annie Get Your Gun. And then there was her turn as Mama Rose in Gypsy, following in the tradition of Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly in a 2003 revival that drew a wildly varied response from critics. Peters and an orchestra perform at 8 p.m. $47-$75. 727 791-7400; www.rutheckerdhall.com
