Hillsborough County commissioners want to hear from South Shore residents.
On Thursday, commissioners will visit for a town hall meeting in the auditorium at East Bay High, 7710 Big Bend Road. Doors open at 5:30 for exhibits from county departments. An open-mike session is expected to run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Residents can bring questions for commissioners and the leaders of key departments. Those who can't attend in person can watch the discussion live on HTV22, the government cable channel. During the meeting, viewers can call in questions and comments to 272-5275. Commissioners stage town hall meetings around the county on a quarterly basis.
School principals changing assignments
BRANDON - Principals are playing musical chairs as new schools open in east Hillsborough County.
The School Board recently named Ruskin Elementary principal Ellen Jennings to the top job at Collins Elementary, opening in the fall in the Panther Trace subdivision. Alafia Elementary principal Pamela Locke will transfer to Frost Elementary, opening in west Brandon.
The region's new middle school - Giunta Middle in west Brandon - will find a leader in Ronald Fritz, the current principal at Benito Middle in Tampa.
The next round: Who will replace the exiting principals?
Ground broken for chamber building
Wednesday was picture perfect for the groundbreaking of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce's new $2-million building on Pauls Drive in Brandon. The current location on Oakfield Drive since 1991 no longer adequately accommodates the growing membership's activities. About 160 people were on hand for the event.
Board members, members of the executive committee and building committee wielded golden shovels to turn dirt for what will be an18,000-square-foot facility. The two-story, H-shaped building will feature a large common area on both floors, a spacious courtyard and accessibility from both Pauls Drive and the rear parking lot. The building is expected to open this fall.
