An official with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service counted 323 manatees during an expanded aerial survey of area waterways Wednesday.
The count was part of the statewide aerial survey conducted each winter when significant cold fronts arrive. The flight pattern stretched from the Suwannee River to the Weeki Wachee River. Of the manatees seen, most were found in the Citrus County waters that are surveyed every other week during the winter months. There were 168 manatees seen in Kings Bay, nine in the Crystal River, 32 in the outflow canal of the Progress Energy complex, 93 in the Homosassa River Blue Waters and seven in the lower Homosassa River. Manatees are sensitive to cold and flock to area springs in the winter to escape cold gulf temperatures.
