Theater's Balcony Club hosts 'Fish, Film and Art'

DOWNTOWN - Tampa Theatre's Balcony Club kicks off its second year at 6 p.m. Thursday with "Fish, Film and Art." A reception begins at 6 p.m. in the theater balcony, followed by an announcement about the future of the club at 6:45 p.m.
Franklin Street Sushi will provide food. Local artist Burt Lancaster will display a collection of his Gyotaku fish rubbings. A screening of Best Foreign Language Film Golden Globe winner The Sea Inside will start at 7:30 p.m.

New book profiles historical Tampa women
DOWNTOWN - Real Women of Tampa and Hillsborough County from Prehistory to the Millennium, a new book of the roles women have played in the development of the area, makes its debut at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio will introduce the author, Doris Weatherford, at a reception and book signing in the University of Tampa's Grand Salon, 401 W Kennedy Blvd.
The book profiles women from Clara Frye, who opened the first hospital for blacks in 1908, to Sandy Freedman, Tampa's first woman mayor.

Judge Mathis to speak at Black History Month event
DOWNTOWN - Judge Greg Mathis kicks off Black History Month at the University of Tampa with a motivational speech at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Falk Theater, 401 W Kennedy Blvd.
Star of a popular syndicated television program, Judge Mathis is a former Detroit gang member who was inspired by a caring judge, who ordered Mathis to earn his GED or go to jail. After heading in a positive direction, he earned a law degree, became an activist and the youngest judge in Michigan history in 1995.

Rabbi teaches free classes on Reform Judaism
PARKLAND ESTATES - Join Rabbi Shoshanah Conover for a look at America's 350-year-old Reform Jewish Movement, as seen through the history of South Tampa's Jewish community. Learn how the history of Tampa's congregations reflects the development of Reform Judaism in America.
The free classes will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 2, 9 and 16 at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, 3303 W Swann Ave.

Catholic school invites community to open house
SWANN ESTATES - The community is invited to an open house at Christ the King Catholic School, 3809 W Morrison Ave., to celebrate Catholic Schools' Week. Visitors can stop by from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
Students' art and educational projects will be on display, and refreshments will be served. For information, call 976-8770.
Volunteers needed to help people with tax returns
TAMPA - The Prosperity Campaign of Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties, a charitable initiative led by the United Way, is seeking volunteers to assist low- and moderate-income families and individuals in receiving tax refunds and benefits.
Volunteers need only basic computer skills and the ability to listen and work with the public. Training sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Saturday at the Hillsborough County Schools Instructional Services Center, 3993 E 21st St.
Volunteers can serve at any Benefit Bank location, including the Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa Inc.; Town 'N Country Family Support and Resource Center; Brandon Family Support and Resource Center; University Family Support and Resource Center; and Children's Board of Hillsborough County. Benefit Banks will operate Feb. 1 through April 15.
