Capriati undergoes shoulder surgery

WILMINGTON, Del. - Jennifer Capriati of Wesley Chapel had surgery on her right shoulder Friday and could start rehabilitation in a week. The operation was performed in Wilmington by Dr. Craig Morgan, who expects Capriati to make a full return. Capriati's spokeswoman, Carla Schalman, did not know when Capriati will return.

Capriati hurt the shoulder at the Advanta Championships in November. It forced her to miss the Australian Open, which she won in '01 and '02.

CLEARWATER WOMEN'S OPEN: Anne Mall won 6-4, 6-4 against fellow Californian Megan Falcon to advance to today's semifinal round in the $10,000 event at McMullen Tennis Complex. Mall faces qualifier Anda Perianu of Romania. In the second semifinal, No. 8 seed Asha Rolle of Miami faces No. 2 seed Christina Wheeler of Australia.

COLLEGES: FSU opens with win

Catcher Aaron Cheesman drove in both FSU runs as the baseball team opened at home with a 2-1 win over Charleston Southern.

SOCCER: New FSU coach Mark Krikorian hired U-17 National Team coach Erica Walsh as his assistant.

TENNIS: Host Florida's mens team (2-0) beat Furman 7-0.

TRACK: FSU's LaToya LeGree won the triple jump with 40 feet, 10.5 inches at the Wildcat Invitational at Clemson. Johnta Griffin won the triple jump on the men's side with 49 feet, 9.25 inches. ... Florida's Candice Scott took second place to former Gator Erin Gilreath, who broke her own world record in the weight throw at the UNC Invitational with a throw of 79 feet, 1.25 inches. ... Miami senior Amber Williams posted a school- and stadium-record 4,088 points to win the pentathlon at the Penn State National Track Meet in State College, Pa.

HORSES: Midas Eyes favored

Midas Eyes, the only Grade 1 stakes winner in the field, was the 6-5 favorite for today's $1-million Classic at Gulfstream Park at Hallandale Beach, the highlight of the Sunshine Millions card at two tracks. There will be eight races, four at Gulfstream and four at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

SKATING: Slutskaya leads in Italy

Five-time winner Irina Slutskaya took the lead in the women's short program of the European championships at Turin, Italy. She has recovered from an inflammation of the heart lining that kept her out last season. If she wins after today's free skate, she matches the titles won by Sonja Henie and Katarina Witt.

SOCCER: United to share field

Starting in April, D.C. United and the Washington Nationals baseball team will share RFK Stadium. The Nationals will play at least three seasons at RFK while a ballpark is built. FESTIVAL: The University of Tampa, Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake City have announced plans for the Tom Fitzgerald Memorial Soccer Festival at Pepin Stadium in Tampa on Feb. 13. The festival include two games featuring the MLS teams and the U.S. U-17 national team. Proceeds go to the Tom Fitzgerald Memorial Scholarship, named after the Spartans coach who died in December.

BOBSLED: Jean Racine led her U.S. bobsled team to a World Cup victory in St. Moritz, Switzerland, setting a track record in the second run. The victory by Racine and Vonetta Flowers moved them into third in the series standings.

BOXING: Scott Harrison retained his WBO featherweight title in a draw with Victor Polo in Glasgow, Scotland.
