LA QUINTA, Calif. - Joe Ogilvie sells himself short.
After shooting 6-under 66 Friday to get to 23 under in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, he downplayed his round.
"I got lucky, basically. The way I played, 66 was a gift," said Ogilvie, who held a two-shot lead over Peter Lonard.
Ogilvie shot 63 a day earlier and then said that while he was leading "score-wise" with a three-shot edge over Phil Mickelson, he considered Mickelson to be the leader because Mickelson had played the more difficult of the four courses used in the tournament.
Mickelson, the winner in '04 and '02, wasn't anywhere near the 54-hole lead after his 70 left him seven behind Ogilvie.
Fredrik Jacobson remained close with 67 that left him third at 19 under.
Craig Stadler, who won the Hope in 1980 for his first tour victory, shot his way into contention with 65 that put him in a group with Mickelson at 16 under, seven shots back.
Davis Love shot 61 to move from a 66th-place tie into a tie for seventh at 11 under.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Hale Irwin got off to a fast start in his bid for a fifth straight victory in the Turtle Bay Championship at Kahuku, Hawaii, shooting 5-under 67 for a share of the first-round lead with Keith Fergus, Gil Morgan and Allen Doyle. Dana Quigley, who won the MasterCard Championship on Sunday, was a stroke back with Bob Gilder, Wayne Levi, Jim Thorpe and Gary McCord.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Nick Dougherty shot 5-under 67 for a one-stroke lead over defending champion Colin Montgomerie in the Caltex Masters at Singapore. Dougherty had 9-under 135 on the Laguna National course. Montgomerie followed his opening 65 with 71. The event is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian tours.
WOODS' CADDIE HURT: Tiger Woods' caddie injured his left hand in an auto-racing accident in Wellington, New Zealand. Steve Williams was driving in a modified saloon car competition at the Baypark Speedway in Tauranga when his car launched into the air and hit a fence. He said the skin on his left hand was torn, exposing bone. The left-handed Williams hopes to return to work at the Nissan Open starting Feb. 17.
