PATTAYA, Thailand - Martina Hingis is set to make her first appearance in a WTA Tour event in more than two years.
Hingis, who retired at age 22 in October 2002 after surgeries on both ankles, is scheduled to face Marlene Weingartner on Tuesday in the first round of the Volvo Women's Open.
"As a competitor and athlete, I always want to win. But I hope my body will last and hold up and help me to come through," Hingis said Sunday. "You miss being out there in a Grand Slam final. ... It's a big difference between staying on court and commenting for TV."
Hingis, who won the Australian Open from 1997-99 and the U.S. Open and Wimbledon in 1997, began her comeback Dec.12 with an exhibition in Spain, teaming with Nadia Petrova to beat Conchita Martinez and Virginia Ruano-Pascual 6-2, 6-2.
